This Greek word, all its compounds and derivatives were common to the Greeks and was used daily to describe a ‘bath,’ ‘washing (soaking) dishes or clothes,’ ’dying cloth’, to the Jews ‘ceremonial washing’ and starting with John the Immerser a New Testament commandment ’baptism.’ A part of the Great Commission to teach and “immerse” disciples in Matthew 28:19-20 / Mark 16:15-16. (Baptism is the transliteration of this word; the translation is ’immersion’.) In the New Testament it is even described as a ’burial’ in Romans 6:1-6. Thayer in his lexicon ’εις αφεσιν αμαρτιων, to obtain the forgiveness of sins, Act 2:38’)
