(OLB G5883) Synonyms for Prayer: euche (εὐχή G2171), proseuche (προσευχή G4335), deesis (δέησις G1162), enteuxis (ἔντευξις G1783), eucharistia (εὐχαριστία G2169), aitema (αἴτημα G155), iketeria (ἱκετηρία G2428)

(εὐχή G2171) euche, when it means prayer, has apparently a general signification. (προσευχή G4335) proseuche and (δέησις G1162) deesis are often used together. (προσευχή G4335) proseuche is restricted to prayer to God, while deesis has no such restriction. (δέησις G1162) deesis also refers chiefly to prayer for particular benefits, while proseuche is more general. The prominent thought in (ἔντευξις G1783) enteuxis is that of boldness and freedom in approach to God. (εὐχαριστία G2169) eucharistia is thanksgiving, the grateful acknowledgment of God's mercies, chiefly in prayer. (αἴτημα G155) aitema, much like (δέησις G1162) deesis, denotes a specific petition for a particular thing. In (ἱκετηρία G2428) iketeria the attitude of humility and deprecation in prayer is specially emphasized. All these words may indicate at times not different kinds of prayer, but the same prayer viewed from different stand-points.
